For some it's the thrill of the race, for others it's the fashion - but for one Cantabrian it's largely the ladies who enticed him to cross the Tasman for the Melbourne Cup.

Jason Riach said the women were a big factor in why he decided to go to the raceday for the first time.

The 26-year-old said that unlike previous years, a couple of mates were going and he had a friend living in the city where he could stay.

CUP DAY: Richard Papps, Jason Riach and Ricky Crannitch at the Melbourne Cup today.

"I thought, why not?"

Riach said he was interested in everything the event had to offer.

"I'm definitely into the fashion; it's a big part of the day. I'm into the racing as well,'' he said.

"The ladies are 50 per cent of the reason I'm going. You get to see everybody looking their best.

"It's the whole package really."

Riach said he had sought advice on what to wear and decided to team a striped shirt and spotted tie with his suit.

His choices on what horses to bet on would be more spur of the moment.

"I'm just going to wing it. I think it's going to be a case of pick your favourite numbers or what names sound the coolest," he said

Riach, who arrived in Melbourne last Thursday and will returns tomorrow, said if the weather held up it should be a "good day out".
