Overturned truck blocks train tracks
The driver of a truck that rolled in Dunsandel, blocking railway lines, has been taken to Christchurch Hospital.
A St John spokesman said a man in his early 30s had minor injuries, including head injuries.
Police said earlier the truck was straddling the railway line on State Highway 1 at the intersection with Selwyn Lake Rd.
The highway was blocked, with a detour in place and officers directing traffic.
A police spokesman said they were alerted to the accident about 7.45am.
He said KiwiRail had been notified to alert train drivers.
Ambulance and fire crews from Dunsandel and Burnham were at the scene.
One witness posted a comment on Facebook saying he saw the fully-laden truck tip over as it came round the bend.
"Then people running up the track waving arms to stop [an] oncoming train before it smashed into it. Heart in mouth watching it all unfold. Stopped just in time..."
Motorists were asked to take care in the area and be patient going through the detour, police said.
For south-bound traffic, turn left into Selwyn Lake Rd, into Boundary Creek Rd and back onto SH1.
For north-bound traffic, turn right into Boundary Creek Rd, into Selwyn Lake rd and back onto SH1.
