A councillor widely tipped to challenge Mayor Bob Parker for the city's top job got a test run today.

With Parker and deputy mayor Ngaire Button absent from this morning's council meeting because of ill health, councillors found themselves in the unusual position of having to elect a new chair.

In a sign of things to come, Cr Glenn Livingstone nominated Cr Tim Carter for the job, and Cr Barry Corbett nominated Cr Sue Wells.

With all the Left-leaning People's Choice councillors swinging behind Carter, who is widely tipped to stand for the mayoralty next year, possibly with Livingstone as his running mate, he was elected to the chair with seven votes.
