An 82-year-old man died after a head-on crash near Clinton this afternoon.
Senior Sergeant Richard Whitmore, of the Balclutha police, said a car and a sport utility vehicle collided at Kuriwao at 1.20pm.
The man, who died at the scene, was a front-seat passenger in the car.
The woman driver was taken to Dunedin Hospital. Her injuries are unknown.
Four people were travelling in the SUV and three suffered moderate to serious injuries.
Two were taken by helicopter to Dunedin Hospital and one to Clutha Health First Hospital.
The driver was uninjured.
The road is closed, with detours available.
It is expected to be reopen tonight.
