A man killed in a head-on collision near Ashburton today may have been at fault, police say.

The man, in his 50s, was driving north in a four-wheel-drive about 4pm when he collided with a stock truck on State Highway 1.

He died as a result of the crash, which happened south of Tinwald near Long Beach Rd .

The man was the only person in the four-wheel-drive.

Sergeant Stephen Burgerhout, of the Ashburton police, said it appeared the man may have caused the crash.

"Investigations are still on-going and we won't know anything until they have been completed, but from our initial investigations it appears the driver of the four-wheel-drive may have been at fault."

Police have closed the road and have been taking witness statements from those at the scene.

Traffic was being diverted  onto Fords Rd and Winslow Westerfield Rd while police continue investigations.

Burgerhout said the road was expected to re-open about 8.30pm.

Is the mayor correct to put libraries, pools and community facilities ahead of the Town Hall?

Absolutely, they're far more important

I think funds should be split between those facilities and the town hall

No, the Town Hall should be rebuilt first

Just demolish the Town Hall completely instead of rebuilding
