A man remains in a critical condition in Christchurch Hospital after a possible hit-and-run early this morning.

He was found with serious head injuries about 6.30am in the driveway of a home on Yaldhurst Rd between Fovant St and Cutts Rd, Russley.

He did not live at the property.

Police Detective Senior Sergeant Tony Hill said the man had been identified, but he was not yet releasing his name.

He remained in a critical condition.

Investigators have been examining the man's home, not far from the address where he was found, in an effort to piece together his movements.

The man is described as a 44-year-old Caucasian, 170 centimetres tall and of medium build.

He has short red hair, a goatee beard and tattoos.

He was wearing red or crimson shorts, a short-sleeved black polo shirt and a grey fleece jacket.

"At this stage our investigation is focused on trying to establish the man's movements prior to him being found early this morning," Hill said.

"We would like to hear from anyone who has seen this man, or any unusual activity, in the vicinity of Yaldhurst Rd and Racecourse Rd, overnight or this morning."

Police have already received several calls from members of the public who have passed on helpful information.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on (03) 363 7400. Alternatively, to provide information anonymously, contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
