A man who shot two children with a pellet gun to discipline them was sentenced to 42 weeks home detention, but will be serving the term at the address with the children.

The shooting caused the children pain and left welts on their skin.

In the Christchurch District Court today, Michael Kevin Shanks, 37, was sentenced on two charges of assaulting the children, possession of cannabis for supply and cultivating cannabis.

Defence counsel April Kelland said the family had been under considerable pressure for some time and the earthquakes had exacerbated their problems.

She said the children, a 10-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy, were getting help and Shanks was going to attend a parenting course next year.

Crown prosecutor Nicola Robson said Child, Youth and Family had been included in the report on Shanks' suitability for home detention and did not have an issue with the family all living in the same house.

Judge Gary MacAskill said the children were his partner's and they were fearful of the BB gun shooting. The pellets had caused pain and welts on their skin.

He said there were five cannabis plants found in a shed and three bags of dried cannabis in a cupboard. A book nearby listed three names, but they were friends of Shanks.

Judge MacAskill said Shanks had cannabis convictions and his pre-sentence report recommended home detention with a programme to address his substance abuse.

The children had initially been removed from the house by Child, Youth and Family, but have since been returned.

Opinion poll

Is the mayor correct to put libraries, pools and community facilities ahead of the Town Hall?

Absolutely, they're far more important

I think funds should be split between those facilities and the town hall

No, the Town Hall should be rebuilt first

Just demolish the Town Hall completely instead of rebuilding
