Several flights into Christchurch were delayed yesterday after the eruption of Mt Tongariro.

Both Air New Zealand and Jetstar were forced to temporarily delay flights as a precautionary measure after the eruption yesterday afternoon.

An Air New Zealand spokeswoman said the airline was working closely with the Civil Aviation Authority, MetService and other authorities to keep up to date with volcanic ash movement and forecasts.

Last night, she told The Press the airline was assessing the situation for flights today.

All Jetstar flights were operating as usual.

A Jetstar spokesman said all flights were operating to their normal schedule "after careful assessment of the situation".

"There were some delays while we assessed the situation but that is to be expected."

The eruption had sent an ash plume shooting into the sky.
