The Christchurch rebuild has been given the royal seal of approval, with Prince Charles agreeing to judge a design competition for a city centre site.

Christchurch landscape architect Di Lucas asked the prince to judge the competition during his recent visit to Christchurch.

The competition is seeking designs for a series of mixed-use residential and commercial buildings on four sites on the south side of Kilmore St, between Manchester St and Colombo St. The sites overlook the green space outlined along the Avon River in the city blueprint.

Lucas said the prince was "really keen" to be involved.

"When we were planning the competition, I thought it would be good to involve him because he is really interested in sustainability and good design," she said.

"I was invited to meet him so I thought I would ask him if he would like to help. He said he would love to."

Prince Charles has an interest in architecture and heritage, helping develop buildings in Britain and establishing a foundation that champions design issues.

Lucas hopes the competition will help landowners develop the sites.

The site owners are involved in the competition but have not committed to building the winning designs.

"The landowners are in a quandary about how to build mixed-use developments. They are not used to it. I thought a design competition could show how it might be done.

"All owners have agreed to have the competition. They will not necessarily do it but might sell the site to someone who is keen to do it."

Entrants must design separate buildings for each 1000-square-metre site that can be developed independently.
