Power has been restored to hundreds of properties in the Christchurch suburb of Heathcote.

Orion spokesman Stuart Kilduss said 458 connections had been affected by a cable fault, including Ferrymead Heritage Park on Ferrymead Park Dr.

The power cut, which affected at least 20 streets, occurred about 6.30pm yesterday.

Kilduss said power was restored at 7.27pm after workmen isolated the faulty cable.

He said it was not known what had caused the cable fault.

"It could be a number of things. The road has been up higher, which puts a lot of strain on the cables. It could be anything; residual damage from the earthquake. We're still finding the odd cable damaged by the earthquakes," he said.
