Bold plans to regenerate New Brighton include putting a slow road through the present pedestrian mall.

Other ideas in the draft New Brighton centre master plan are to extend Oram Ave, move the supermarket and create a new entertainment hub.

The plan, which is available online, includes proposals for a new bus interchange in a car park in Beresford St, new public toilets and a cycle route from the seafront to the Avon River.

Economic analysis conducted for the master plan has found New Brighton has about 11 hectares of retail space but can only support about 4ha of retail.

The plan concentrates retail space at the seafront end of the mall, with other parts of the centre rezoned for residential development or travellers' accommodation.

The plan will be considered by the local community board on Monday and then city councillors before going out for consultation.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
