A 19-month-old Tapawera girl who was bitten on the forehead by the family dog was flown to Nelson Hospital this afternoon.

The girl was treated by Tapawera St John and the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter's intensive care paramedic and flown to the hospital about 3pm.

St John team manager Jon Leach said the girl had a moderate to deep cut to her forehead.

He believed the family dog had struck out causing the injury.

He did not know the breed of dog.
