Plan to recover cast offs
Thousands of wheelie bins lying on empty sites and outside abandoned homes should be collected by next month, Christchurch City Council says.
It has been revealed that the council has received 2872 requests to replace missing or stolen bins since the February 2011 earthquake.
If the bin is stolen from a property or from the kerbside outside collection hours, it is up to the property owner to pay for the replacement.
A set of three standard wheelie bins costs $342.
The council has come under fire from some ratepayers after saying this week that more than 9000 red-zone bins were unaccounted for.
A former Horseshoe Lake red-zone resident, who did not want to be named, said there were many bins outside demolished properties and abandoned houses that could be put to use.
"There are a hell of a lot around . . . the demo guys are very careful to leave the bins there but the council don't seem that keen on picking them up."
However, council water and waste manager Mark Christison said council contractor Transpacific, which owns the bins, was making regular red-zone visits to collect bins from properties owned by the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (Cera).
"Many bins are full of waste and need emptying before they are moved so it is a slow process, but the recovery rate is fairly good."
Christison said the teams could not go on to privately owned properties without the owner's permission.
Residents who had bins to pick up should contact the council.
