University of Canterbury researchers are looking for 400 smokers across the country for a study on the costs of cigarettes.

The price of cigarettes is set to rise 10 per cent on New Year's Day and will increase by another 10 per cent each year for the following three years.

The reforms, which the Government passed last month, are expected to lift the average price of a pack of cigarettes from about $14.30 today to $20 by 2016.

The research team would ask how much the price of cigarettes needed to increase before they would quit and whether, after puffing on an electronic (nicotine-only inhaler) cigarette, they thought they would quit sooner.

Nicotine electronic cigarettes cannot be sold in New Zealand but can be used in research.
