A derelict building has caught fire in Christchurch's city centre, the Fire Service says.

Firefighters were called to the building, located on the corner of Colombo and Gloucester Streets just after 9.30 pm.

A Fire Service spokesman said there was not thought to be anyone in the building.

It was not known yet what building was on fire, but it was in the vicinity of the Telecom building, he said.
