A man in his 70s has suffered serious spinal and back injuries after falling off the back of a trailer.

A Westpac rescue helicopter spokesman said the accident occurred at a property in Dixons Rd,  Loburn about 5pm yesterday.

He understood the man had been loading a lawn mower onto the trailer when he slipped and fell backwards, landing on his back on the draw bar of the trailer.

He believed a neighbour was with the man at the time and raised the alarm.

He was flown to Christchurch Hospital in a stable condition.
