Fitzgerald Ave
DRIVERS' DELIGHT: Fitzgerald Ave will reopen on Friday.

A major Christchurch intersection is set to reopen fully for the first time since the February 2011 earthquake.

Fitzgerald Ave will be open on Friday, and the traffic lights at the Kilmore St-Avonside Dr intersection will start operating.

"This is an important rebuild milestone for a significant part of the city's four avenues," Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team (Scirt) general manager Duncan Gibb said.

"Scirt delivery team Downer has worked hard to get this piece of road reopened in time for Christmas and conquer a number of challenges along the way."

Fitzgerald Ave's southbound lanes - heading towards town from Bealey Ave - have been sealed and are ready to open for traffic.

The rebuilt northbound lanes and the walkway and cycleway were completed just before Labour Weekend.

Drivers heading east have been unable to turn right into Avonside Dr from Fitzgerald Ave, but this option will now be restored.

The Fitzgerald Ave project, which includes rebuilding the road, walkway, cycleway and retaining wall, and installing new pipes under the western side of the road, began in the middle of last year.

Other Scirt piping and roadworks projects will continue to the south and north of the Avonside Dr area of Fitzgerald Ave.

This means that the full road opening, with all lanes open from Bealey Ave to Moorhouse Ave, is still some months off.
