Farmer found hours after quad bike accident
A farmer was flown to hospital after falling off his quad bike in Kaituna Valley yesterday.
The man, in his 60s, was found by his neighbour just before a helicopter search was about to be launched.
His family had raised the alarm in the evening when he failed to return home and local police started searching for him, search and rescue co-ordinator Sergeant Ryan O'Rourke said.
"They were looking for him and we were in the process of getting a helicopter ready to search for him when his neighbour located him," he said.
"We called off the search and sent the Westpac rescue helicopter who managed to rescue him."
A St John spokesman said the man had fallen off his quad bike in the afternoon.
"He had an accident on quite a hilly area and had been there all day. He had some injuries, including hip and pelvic injuries."
The man had to be winched off the hilly cliff face by the helicopter about 9pm and was taken to Christchurch Hospital.
