A search is under way for an 84-year-old hunter missing overnight in the Nelson Lakes National Park.
Sergeant Mike Fitzsimons, of Nelson, said the Feilding man was hunting in a party of six and was based at the Sabine Hut in the Lake Rotoroa area.
The group planned to hunt until 5pm yesterday and then meet at a designated point, but the man failed to make the rendezvous.
He did not answer shots fired into the air last night.
The man was hunting in the Maori Creek area on the south side of Lake Rotoroa.
Three Land Search and Rescue teams headed into the area, with a tracking dog.
A helicopter is also flying over the area.
The missing man was an experienced hunter who was fit and healthy and well prepared to survive a night in the bush, police said.
However, he was not familiar with the area, which had steep terrain.
