Suspicious blaze sends flames 20m high
Rural firefighters battled a blaze that sent flames 20 metres high south of Swannanoa this afternoon.
Waimakariri principal rural fire officer Tim Sheppard said the fire off Two Chain Rd appeared to be suspicious.
Strong winds blew the fire down a shingle track towards the Waimakariri River, he said.
Crews have not yet found the source of the fire, but school pupils are among the suspects.
"School is out," Sheppard said.
"Fires don't start by themselves."
The fire burnt about a hectare of scrub before crews from Rangiora, Cust, Swannanoa and Pines Beach brought it under control.
The land is owned by Environment Canterbury.
