A Christchurch woman was seriously injured and her dog killed when another canine attacked them both.

The woman and her small dog were out walking in Crosbie Park, near Woodbury St in Avonhead, about 8am yesterday when they were attacked.

A police spokesman said the woman's dog was killed in the incident.

"It seems there was some sort of fight between the two dogs," he said.

"The woman received bites to her arms and her dog was killed by the other dog."

The woman was taken to Christchurch Hospital with serious arm injuries and was believed to have undergone surgery.

Police managed to subdue the attacking dog. The Christchurch City Council animal control team has been notified of the incident.
