A Christmas function went horribly wrong for one Canterbury 25-year-old man, who was hospitalised for two days after being kicked in the groin by an associate during a round of golf.

Constable Mike Harker said police were investigating the incident, which happened at the Tai Tapu Golf Club on Friday.

Harker said the 25-year-old tradesman told police he was at a Christmas function being held at the golf course when he was assaulted about 4pm.

The man left the golf course and walked down the road, where a passer-by helped him and phoned an ambulance.  When police spoke to him "he was in a lot of pain", Harker said.

The man suffered "moderate to serious" haematomas to his groin, which required surgery, Harker said.

The 25-year-old was discharged from hospital today.

Anyone with information on the incident was asked to phone the Lincoln police on 03 325-2800.
