Canterbury families gathered at Latimer Square to celebrate Christmas Eve event last night.

The Christmas on Latimer event began at 5pm with performances by the Cathedral Choir, before the 65th annual Carols by Candlelight and a midnight mass.

Former radio host Mike Yardley was the event's master of ceremonies.

Carols By Candlelight was first started in 1947 and encourages people to celebrate family and Christmas in a traditional manner.

The event aims to bring together all faiths, age groups and cultures.

Latimer Square has become the city's main hub of Christmas celebrations in recent weeks with the large Telecom tree being a popular attraction since it was lifted into place earlier this month.
