Police are searching for a Palmerston North man who failed to return from a tramp in the Mt Owen area of Kahurangi National Park near Nelson.

Alistair Levy, 54, was due to meet family in Christchurch on Monday but failed to arrive.

The last contact with him was on Sunday, when he sent a text message saying he had reached the summit of Mt Owen.

Five teams, with a dog and specialist cavers, are searching the park.

A helicopter crew flew in the area last night with night-vision equipment, but failed to find Levy.

Levy left Nelson on Saturday morning for a tramp.

His car has been found at the start of the track at Courthouse Flat.

Levy is an experienced tramper who has completed many solo hikes, but he was not carrying a locator beacon.

Anyone with information about Levy should contact the Nelson police.
