A Canterbury octogenarian believes a $500,000 Lotto win was predicted by her horoscope in The Press.

The woman, who does not want to be named, bought her winning ticket at the Gift & Lotto Ship in Rangiora.

''I always read the horoscopes in The Press, and a few weeks ago it said some money would come through soon, just in time to get some accommodation, and sure enough I get this win, and then a unit has come available to buy too,'' the lucky Sagittarian said.

''But today's stars say, 'You know what you want to buy, but don't spend', so I better pay attention to that too.''

Another elderly Rangiora woman struck it lucky this week by winning a Mini car with the Instant Kiwi Summer Game Pack.

However, she decided to take a cash prize offer instead.

''We'd love to take the Mini and burn around town in it, but we're both in our 70s and it's a bit low for us, so we'll take the money this time around,'' she said.

The other $500,000 first-division prize from last Saturday's Lotto draw has been claimed by a Wellington couple.

Is the mayor correct to put libraries, pools and community facilities ahead of the Town Hall?

Absolutely, they're far more important

I think funds should be split between those facilities and the town hall

No, the Town Hall should be rebuilt first

Just demolish the Town Hall completely instead of rebuilding
