A deliberately lit fire that destroyed a Russley home could have had ''fatal consequences''.

Detective Phil McDonnell said emergency services were called to a fire at a house opposite the Riccarton racecourse in the Yaldhurst Rd-Cutts Rd area about 1am today.

One person was in the house but escaped unharmed.

McDonnell said that if it had not been for the quick actions of the person in the house, the fire may have had fatal consequences.

The Fire Service and the Christchurch metro CIB concluded that the fire was suspicious.

Police believe the property was deliberately targeted and an accelerant used to light the fire.

McDonnell said it was fortunate for the person inside that the fire caused only minor damage to the front of the property.

Police are appealing for any information. Phone McDonnell on 363 7570 or Christchurch police station 3637400.

Opinion poll

Is the mayor correct to put libraries, pools and community facilities ahead of the Town Hall?

Absolutely, they're far more important

I think funds should be split between those facilities and the town hall

No, the Town Hall should be rebuilt first

Just demolish the Town Hall completely instead of rebuilding
