A reported car crash in North Canterbury today may have been a hoax.

Emergency services received reports of a two-car crash at Hawkeswood about 11am.

The Westpac rescue helicopter was sent to the scene.

However, a St John spokesman said neither police nor ambulance staff were able to locate the crash.

"It may have been a hoax, or if not, the vehicles had left the scene by the time we arrived," he said.

In another accident, a 29-year-old Blenheim woman crashed in Havelock, Marlborough, at 8.30am.

The Nelson-Marlborough rescue helicopter treated the woman for serious injuries at the scene.

Her 4-year-old son, a passenger in the vehicle, suffered moderate injuries.

Both were flown to Nelson Hospital.
