A public engagement at the World Buskers Festival in Christchurch took Daniel Resendiz and Julia Heidbuechel's whirlwind romance to the next step.
Resendiz, who came to Christchurch four years ago from Mexico, proposed to Heidbuechel in front of a large audience at New Brighton this afternoon during a performance by the Blackstreet Boyz.
"I'm really happy," said Resendiz, who received "yes" for an answer.
He had been planning the proposal for two weeks and his friends had helped him to organise it.
"I was thinking about it for a long time," he said.
It was love at first sight when he met Heidbuechel three months ago, when she came to New Zealand for a working holiday.
"I knew she was the one," he said.
Heidbuechel was going to go back to Germany, but Resendiz hoped the engagement would change her plans.
It came as a surprise when onlookers cheered and clapped for them, said Resendiz.
His family in Mexico was very happy for him and would have liked to be here for his engagement. He and Heidbuechel will share the news with her family tomorrow.
