A man who died after a boating accident near Dunedin was Robert Wilfred Clearwater, 75, of Portobello, on the Otago Peninsula.
Clearwater was one of two men thrown into the water at Papanui Inlet on the peninsula when their dinghy capsized about 2pm yesterday.
The other man was able to hold on to a buoy, but Clearwater encountered difficulties while in the water.
Police said the men were not wearing life jackets.
People who witnessed the accident tried to help, but Clearwater could not be revived.
Emergency services including the Otago rescue helicopter attended, with the surviving boat occupant being treated for suspected water inhalation at Dunedin Public Hospital.
