Five people have been taken to Christchurch Hospital after a car crash in Selwyn.

A St John spokesman said the crash occurred at the intersection of Dawsons and Chattertons roads about 11am today.

He said two people suffered serious injuries, and three had moderate injuries.

"The patients have a variety of injuries, including head, torso and arm injuries."

He understood the crash involved at least three vehicles, "one of which ended up in a ditch next to the road, upside down".

Four ambulances and two response vehicles were at the scene.

Police and fire crews also attended.
