Several fires kept crews busy in Canterbury overnight.

A Fire Service spokesman said four crews were called to a shed fire in Gloucester St, near Stanmore Rd, about 10pm.

He said the eight metre by two metre shed was "well ablaze" when they arrived.

A Fire Safety Officer is investigating.

Other Christchurch crews dealt with a number of minor fires.

They extinguished a grass fire in Islington, rubbish fires in Woolston and Hornby and a skip fire in New Brighton.
A Fire Service spokesman said it was ''not uncommon'' to deal with a number of small suspicious fires on a Saturday night.

Meanwhile, fire safety officers are investigating the cause of a house fire in Wanaka last night.

They were called to the house on Beacon Point Rd, which was ''well involved'' when they arrived at 6.30pm.
Nobody was injured and the fire is not considered suspicious.
