Fireworks and music delighted a crowd of thousands in chilly conditions at Christchurch's annual Classical Sparks concert.

The Hobbit star Mark Hadlow hosted last night's Hagley Park event, while performers included the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, the NZ Army band and several soloists.

The concert was scheduled for Tuesday night but was postponed because of poor weather.

Paul Kean, from the Christchurch City Council events team, said the crowd rivalled last year's concert, where an estimated 50,000 people turned out.

Kean said the crowd was grateful the event had not been cancelled.

"It was a really lovely atmosphere. Everyone looked so happy and content," he said.
