One dead in Kainga crash

LATEST: An elderly man is dead and two others injured following a two-car collision near Kainga today. 

The fatal crash occurred on Chaneys Corner on Main North Rd in Belfast and the fire service, police and St John ambulance were in attendance.

The passenger in the car, an elderly female, was transferred to Christchurch Hospital by ambulance with serious injuries.

The driver of the other car involved in the crash received only minor injuries.

Police say initial enquiries indicate that the car driven by the deceased had been travelling east on Main North Road when it collided with the vehicle travelling north on Marshland Road.

Enquiries into the cause of the crash are continuing.

The name of the deceased is expected to be released tomorrow, after next-of-kin have been notified.

Diversions at the scene of the crash were in place for much of the afternoon, but were lifted at 6pm.
