Robbery suspect popped into pub
An alleged robber took the time to duck into a nearby pub before he held up a Christchurch video store yesterday - but it was to use the toilet rather than get some Dutch courage.
Police are seeking public information on the man, described as being in his early 20s with unusual dyed orange hair. The same man is suspected of holding up a nearby Asian supermarket earlier that day.
Detective Gary Absalom said the man walked into the Star Video store in Wairakei Rd about 2.45pm on Saturday, demanded money and threatened a staff member with an item he had concealed under his top.
He then fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.
The female video store staff member was working at the store on her own when the robbery happened.
A staff member said yesterday the woman was off work yesterday, but planned to be back today. "It was broad daylight, you don't expect anything to happen."
A staff member at the nearby Little Brown Jug pub said the man was seen in the bar shortly before the robbery. "He was in here for about two minutes, just used the toilet," she said.
Absalom said the man was believed to have held up another shop only 15 minutes before entering the video store. "Based on the description, we believe it's highly likely it's the same person."
The man presented a note to a staff member at a nearby Asian supermarket about 2.30pm, which said: "Give me money, I have a gun".
The Asian shopkeeper brandished an item towards the offender, who said he was "joking" and left the shop. "They weren't too fazed, there was no money taken."
The alleged offender is described as Maori, of average build and with distinctive orange-coloured hair, wearing a cap, shorts and white shoes. Anyone with information should call Absalom on 03 363 7648.
