Boy injured in boat explosion

A 7-year-old boy has been seriously injured in a boat explosion in Waikara Marina, outside Picton.

The boy and a middle-aged man have been flown to Wellington Hospital following the explosion, which occured just after 9am in the picturesque harbour just outside Picton.

A St John ambulance spokesman said the child has sustained serious injured to his leg, meanwhile the man is in a moderate condition.

A Fire Service spokesman said the cause of the explosion is still unknown.

Meanwhile father and son were both reported to be in a stable condition by Wellington Hospital's emergency department staff this afternoon.

"It is expected they will both be admitted to hospital," a hospital spokesman said.
