A man allegedly caught peeping into Hagley Park toilet cubicles has been charged with offensive behaviour and committing an indecent act in a public place.

Glen Alan Newell, 43, of no fixed abode, was arrested on February 19.

A member of the public alerted police to the unemployed man after allegedly seeing him looking over the top of the male cubicles, and into the female ones.

A woman who had been using the toilet in Deans Ave near Ayr St, ran off in a distressed state, the police said.

Newell was given a registrar's remand on bail to March 11, so did not appear in the Christchurch District Court today.
