Morning commuters are being asked to avoid a busy intersection after traffic lights have failed.

A police spokesman said the lights on the Papanui Road-Bealey Avenue corner are not operating.

"A pointsman is on duty however motorists can expect delays and are requested, if possible, to avoid the area.''

The intersection is of the city's busiest, linking the northern suburbs of Christchurch with the central city and also linking with arterial roads to other parts of the city.
