A judge has refused continued name suppression for a teacher who admits making secret upskirt videos, but the ban on publication will remain until a likely High Court appeal has been heard.

The hearing on suppression was heard on February 15 and Christchurch District Court Judge Phillip Moran released his decision this week.

Police had opposed continued suppression for the man after his guilty pleas, and a separate hearing was held just to consider that issue.

Judge Moran said at the hearing that his decision would impose a further period during which suppression would continue to allow time for the filing of any appeals to the High Court.

He has decided in the reserved decision that the suppression will be lifted on the man's name, but will continue for some details related to the offending.

In the meantime, name suppression will continue until March 6 to allow defence counsel Bryan Green to consider an appeal against the ruling to the High Court, and give him time to file papers. It was indicated at the earlier hearing that an appeal was likely.

Once the papers are filed, the suppression will remain in place until the High Court hears the appeal in a few weeks.

The middle-aged man has admitted making 20 secret intimate recordings involving 17 victims. The offending was committed in Christchurch and surrounding areas from June 15 to November 17. The name of the institution where the man worked cannot be published.

The hearing of submissions on February 15 was held in closed court with Judge Moran limiting what could be reported.

The teacher remains on bail with sentencing set for April 18.
