Power is out to more than 4000 homes in Christchurch's CBD and the suburbs of St Albans, Merivale and Beckenham.

More than 4000 homes lost power in central Christchurch on Tuesday evening.

According to the website of lines company Orion, power went out to homes in Beckenham, the CBD, Merivale and St Albans about 5.40pm on Tuesday.

Power was restored to most homes by 6.20pm and to all remaining homes by 9.20pm.

A Christchurch Transport Operations Centre spokesman said about 20 traffic lights were out.

Motorists were advised to apply the give way rules.

A Fire Service spokesman said they had received several calls relating to the outage, including reports of a person stuck in a lift at Fino Hotel and Suites on Kilmore St.

The power outage was caused by a cable fault, but further information was not immediately available.
