A red van flipped and landed in the Avon River in Christchurch on Wednesday afternoon.

A van "flipped in the air" and into Christchurch's Avon River as a high school rowing crew looked on.

Christchurch Girls' High School rowing coach and year 13 student Sophie Jackson said it was scary to think the van could have landed on her crew as they trained on Wednesday afternoon.

"I heard a screech of tyres and saw a red van come flying from the other side of the road.

"It flipped over the bank and into the water and created a huge splash." she said.

Jackson saw the incident unfold from the bank opposite the intersection of Avondale Rd and New Brighton Rd about 4pm.

"[The driver] climbed out of the passenger window and made his way to the bank," she said.

"As I called the ambulance, a lot of people had stopped to help him with blankets. He was fine but looked pretty stunned."

Emergency services attended the scene.

A Fire Service spokesman said one person was out of the vehicle when firefighters arrived. No-one else was in the crashed vehicle.
