A man has appeared in court over a road-rage incident that ended with a windscreen being smashed, possibly with a golf club.

The 22-year-old has been charged with wilful damage over the incident in Hornby shortly before noon last Friday.

He appeared in court yesterday and was remanded to June 10.

Police said an altercation between two drivers, one a retired former United States marine, started with a ''merging issue'' on State Highway 1 near Rolleston.

Both cars stopped at the corner of Marshs and Shands roads, where the 22-year-old allegedly smashed the older man's windscreen.

The Press understands a golf putter was involved.

Acting Sergeant John Groen said the investigation was continuing as the parties had different opinions on what happened.

He said further charges could be laid.

Police are seeking any witnesses of the altercation.

Anyone with information should call Constable Craig Watts on 363 7400.

Is the mayor correct to put libraries, pools and community facilities ahead of the Town Hall?

Absolutely, they're far more important

I think funds should be split between those facilities and the town hall

No, the Town Hall should be rebuilt first

Just demolish the Town Hall completely instead of rebuilding
