An 18-year-old driver has died after crashing into a flooded ditch near Tai Tapu.

Oliver Steven Mills, of Tai Tapu, was killed when his vehicle left the road and crashed into a flooded ditch in Rhodes Rd yesterday morning.

A member of the public called emergency services about 10.30am yesterday after noticing a vehicle upside down in a drainage ditch along the road.

The driver was found dead in the vehicle.

Police said it appeared Mills' vehicle left the road, flipped and came to rest in the water-filled ditch.

No other vehicles were believed to be involved and it was not yet known whether alcohol or speed were factors.

Road conditions were very wet at the time of the crash, which was believed to have happened between 1am and 7am yesterday.
