Redcliffs New World will be built
The South Island's largest grocery operator, Foodstuffs South Island, has a substantial building programme planned for Christchurch, with another project in the city pipeline.
The former Woolston SuperValue, rebranded as a New World store last month, could be expanded significantly, pending the outcome of a feasibility study into development on the site.
Residents of Sumner and Redcliffs, who lost the Redcliffs Village New World because of quake damage, will welcome the news.
In April, Foodstuffs said that, while the Woolston store would initially be a smaller-sized New World, plans were under way to build a new one next to the existing supermarket.
Yesterday, Foodstuffs general manager retail development Roger Davidson said Foodstuffs was undertaking feasibility studies to work out what it could do on the site, and it was too early to say what development it was considering.
The rebranding of the store was the first stage, which had been completed, and the second stage now was the feasibility study.
Foodstuffs has announced several projects in past months:
- The rebuild of the Wainoni Pak 'n Save would start next month, and the new store would be similar in size to the existing store, which would continue to trade throughout the build.
- A planned refurbishment of the Stanmore Rd New World, which is still trading, is scheduled to start in the next four to six weeks.
- Resource consent has also been granted for a $20 million New World supermarket to be built next to Christchurch's Prestons subdivision.
Davidson confirmed Foodstuffs still planned to rebuild Redcliffs Village New World but was in discussions with the Christchurch City Council over infrastructure matters in the area.
Those included roading, underground services, cycleways and traffic signals, he said.
Once it had clarity from the council on those issues, Foodstuffs would then finalise a timeframe for the rebuild of that supermarket.
