A person has been killed after a crash south of Timaru which has closed State Highway 1.
Emergency services were called to the crash south of Pareora about 3.20pm.
The crash involved a a 4WD and a truck and trailer unit.
One person, reportedly the driver, remained inside the 4WD
SH1 was blocked and detours in place.
At least one passenger and the driver of the truck unit had been transported to hospital by ambulance, police at the scene said.
It was not immediately clear what caused the crash, and the driver of the 4WD had not yet been identified.
The truck unit had come to rest against a power pole and caught fire, with one side of the trailer gone. The blaze had been extinguished.
Police said SH1 would likely remain closed for hours while a serious crash investigation team travelled down from Christchurch.
Traffic was being detoured via Woolshed Valley and Springbank roads.
