A 67-year-old man was seriously injured when his hand and arm were caught in mussel harvesting equipment in the Marlborough Sounds yesterday afternoon.

The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter said it was called to the incident about 2.30pm on a mussel boat in Oyster Bay, at Port Underwood.

The man was treated at the scene by St John Ambulance and the onboard intensive care paramedic before being flown directly to Hutt Hospital, in Wellington, for specialist treatment.

He was reported to be in a stable condition last night.
