Shoppers flock to Ballantynes sale
Thousands of keen shoppers have turned out for the annual Ballantynes sale.
Ballantynes managing director Mary Devine said the store had processed more than 4000 transactions by mid-afternoon today.
"We're just delighted really. Sales are up on our previous sales," she said.
The sale of women's fashion, accessories and cosmetics will continue until Sunday, while men's suits will go on sale on Monday, followed by a weekend sale on all menswear and homeware.
Ballantynes has been a fixture in central Christchurch for almost 160 years, with its popular winter sales regularly attracting hundreds of bargain-hunters.
The department store was forced to close for more than eight months after the February 2011 earthquake but reopened in November that year as part of the Re:Start container mall precinct.
