A man who died after his car ran off the road near Murchison this afternoon had probably experienced a heart attack, police said.

The incident happened just after 2pm on State Highway 6 near Glenhope - about 40 kilometres north-east of Murchison in the Tasman district.

The Nelson/Marlborough Rescue Helicopter was called to assist, but the man died at the scene.

A police spokesman said it appeared the man had suffered a heart attack, which caused his car to run off the road and roll.

Emergency services remained at the scene late this afternoon as inquiries into the man's death continued.
