Muddled thinking from a brain addled with drugs has led to an armed robbery and a community-based sentence for a 21-year-old Kaiapoi man.
Joshua William Topp will have to do a year's home detention and 200 hours of community work after admitting an aggravated robbery and a burglary.
He went into the Wayside Dairy in Bassett St, Avonside, in the early afternoon of May 8, but left because another customer came in.
Later that afternoon he went back, selected a cookie, and when the shopkeeper opened the cash register he pointed a hunting knife with a 15-centimetre blade at him.
He reached over and took about $320 cash out of the till and left in his car.
He went home and when he told his mother what he had done, the police were called. Two days later, he co-operated with them and showed them where he had disposed of the knife.
He told them he needed the money to pay off a drug debt, and immediately paid reparation of $320 and wrote a letter of apology to the shopkeeper.
But while on bail he went to an address in Tuahiwi and removed a hot-water cylinder and copper piping. The occupant was not home because he was in hospital.
Neighbours heard the noise he made and police found him at his home, where he told them his own hot-water cylinder had been stolen and he suspected the occupant of taking it.
Public Defence Service lawyer Bridget Ayrey said Topp had been in custody for some time, which had been a good thing as it led to him abstaining from an escalating drug addiction.
Christchurch District Court Judge Phillip Moran said the reasons for the offending showed muddled thinking from a brain addled with drugs.
He said both sets of offending were premeditated, but no violence was used, and the knife was used only to threaten.
On both occasions Topp did not disguise himself, and used his own car, so there was no attempt to hide his identity.
Judge Moran sentenced Topp to home detention, community work and ordered reparation of $300 for the damage done removing the hot-water cylinder.
