A man is in a stable condition after he was critically injured in a crash on Christchurch's Southern Motorway.

The man was understood to have crashed into a pole on the side of the motorway between the Curletts Rd and Barrington St off-ramps on Saturday morning.

A police spokeswoman said the crash, which was reported about 7.50am, partially blocked the southbound slow lane until about 10.30am.

A St John spokesman said the man was in a critical condition when he arrived at Christchurch Hospital.

A Canterbury District Health Board spokeswoman said the man was in stable condition on Sunday morning.
