The Haast Pass road will stay closed for the rest of today as a slip along the route continues to move.
The section of State Highway 6 from Haast to Makarora had reopened on Thursday but was closed again yesterday after heavy rain started falling.
Around 8.45am today the NZ Transport Agency confirmed the route would remain closed.
Yesterday NZTA performance manager Pete Connors said the slip at Diana Falls had started to move making it unsafe for motorists to travel through the area.
"With the continual movement of material on the slip face and gravel and rock falling on to the highway, it is simply too dangerous for anyone to be travelling through the area," he said.
The Diana Falls slip sat within a challenging geological site and coupled with the forces of nature, was proving difficult to stabilise and manage.
"As a result, there will be continued uncertainty with access along this section of SH6 when there is heavy rain and this situation is expected to remain for some time yet."
For safety reasons the road is being closed at nights between 6pm and 8am until further notice.
